6th Annual Black History Trail Blazers Sidewalk Parade

Description

This year’s Black History Sidewalk Parade is taking place in historic Truxton, starting and ending at the Greater Mt. Zion Church of God in Christ (COGIC). 

  • 9:30 a.m. – Bus leaves from the Neighborhood Facility Rec Center, 900 Elm Ave., Portsmouth, providing transportation to the event
  • 10 a.m. – Parade begins, starting from the Greater Mt. Zion COGIC

There will be Black history exhibitions, singing, dancing, storytellers and enactments honoring those who paved the way.

  • Learn about the history of this area, including the story of the first Black church burned in Portsmouth during the Civil Rights era
  • Dress up as a famous current or historical Black trailblazer – wear a name tag with 5 facts about that person
  • Prizes for best costume, largest group, best narrative and more
